Common Causes of Staining

If your teeth are stained, you may feel self-conscious and avoid smiling or laughing in social situations. Unfortunately, staining can occur naturally over time as we age and drink coffee, wine, and soda. By eliminating stains and yellowing, whitening will restore a brighter, more youthful smile, making you look and feel younger!

Treatment on Your Own Terms

Take-Home Treatment Process

If you have minor staining and want to change your tooth color by a few shades, or are on a whitening maintenance routine, the take-home whitening process is simple and convenient. First, you’ll come in for an appointment with Dr. Song or Dr. Guerrero, and they will create a custom set of whitening trays built to fit your teeth perfectly. Then, you’ll get a set of whitening products, which you’ll use over a period of 2 weeks, based on the instructions provided to you by Dr. Song or Dr. Guerrero, so you can whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

In-Office Treatment Process

If you want the best possible whitening results, our office uses a one-two punch of take-home whitening followed by an in-office whitening session. This process is incredibly effective for even the most resistant of stains. (including grayness from antibiotic use!)

We’ll first fit you for take-home custom trays to get you to a brighter shade of white. After whitening for 2 weeks at home, we bring you back for your in-office session for even more dramatic whitening results. This dual process ensures that you get the brightest results possible!

the KöR difference

What We Use

Our office exclusively uses KöR whitening system professional-grade products, which are only available through KöR dentists! KöR is the first company to refrigerate a full line of whitening products from manufacture until they are delivered cold to our dental office. This refrigeration process minimizes the degradation of the whitening ingredients to maximize their effectiveness. Your comfort is our priority, and we realize that all whitening can produce some sensitivity. That’s why every KöR patient receives a bottle of whitening desensitizer!

Comparing Store-Bought & Professional Whitening

What’s the Difference?

In general, professional whitening is safer, more effective, and provides better overall results than store-bought whitening kits. There are a few reasons for this.

First, most ADA-approved whitening products, such as Crest Whitestrips, use a relatively low amount of peroxide (whitener). This is because using a low amount of whitener helps reduce the risk of accidentally over-whitening your teeth. However, this also means that it will take a lot longer to get a brighter smile if you use an over-the-counter product like Crest Whitestrips.

In addition, professional whitening treatments are not “one-size-fits-all” like OTC whitening kits are. At Seattle Dental Co., Dr. Belinda Song or Dr. Amanda Guerrero will develop a whitening plan that’s customized for your teeth, your level of staining, and your desired results.

There are also quite a few whitening kits out there, especially on websites like Amazon, that use an extremely high, unsafe amount of whitener. Using these whitening kits could cause your teeth to become brittle and chalky, and increases your risk of side effects like gum damage and tooth sensitivity.

In addition, there are some whitening products out there that are completely ineffective and can damage your smile permanently. Charcoal toothpaste is the latest example of this. It uses abrasive charcoal granules that are supposed to “whiten” your teeth. But instead of whitening your teeth, charcoal toothpaste slowly eats away at your enamel, weakening your teeth permanently.

For these reasons, choosing professional whitening from Seattle Dental Co. will always be the best choice if you want the best possible results from your teeth whitening treatment.

The Safety of Teeth Whitening

Are There Any Side Effects?

Professional teeth whitening has minimal side effects. We will use special protective equipment to ensure that your gums do not come into contact with whitening compound, which prevents gum irritation, and Dr. Song and Dr. Guerrero will ensure that your teeth are not over-whitened, which can cause them to look translucent or “chalky.”

The only common side effect of teeth whitening is some minor sensitivity. Your teeth may feel sensitive to heat and cold for a few days after your treatment ends. This will go away quite quickly. We recommend using a sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne to help with your sensitivity while you recover.

Budgeting for Your New Smile

How Much Does Teeth Whitening Cost?

The price of teeth whitening depends on a variety of factors, such as your chosen method (in-office vs. take-home whitening), how stained your teeth are, and your desired level of whitening.

For these reasons, to get an accurate estimate of the cost of your treatment, we recommend you come in for a consultation at Seattle Dental Co. Teeth whitening is a very affordable cosmetic treatment. If you’d like to improve your smile but you are on a tight budget, teeth whitening is a great choice.
